The keynote presentation was delivered by Dr. Arun Kasi, a maritime law expert and practising barrister based in London. Dr. Kasi provided an insightful overview of the Limitation of Liability for Maritime Claims (LLMC), discussing its practical implications for shipowners, regulators, and other maritime stakeholders in Sarawak.
Following the presentation, YB Dato Sri Lee highlighted the crucial need for shipowners and maritime players to understand both the legal framework and practical impact of liability limitations. He reiterated that maritime law must evolve in tandem with industry developments, stating:
“Maritime law plays an evolving role in safeguarding and advancing the growth of Sarawak’s shipping and maritime industries. Our laws must be updated, aligned with international standards, and designed to facilitate, not hinder industry development.”
The session concluded with a dynamic expert discussion aimed at deepening the understanding of maritime liability provisions and fostering stronger collaboration between the government and industry stakeholders.
This joint initiative underscores the shared commitment of P&I Malaysia and the Ministry of Transport Sarawak to promote legal awareness, build institutional capacity, and support the sustainable growth of Sarawak’s maritime sector.
